ABOUT ME - SHANNON

Shannon White Hat is a proud Rosebud Sioux Tribal member. Home is where the heart is, and for Shannon, that's in Lawrence, Kansas, and belongs to a vibrant, intertribal community, thanks to Haskell Indian Nations University's presence. It's here she gained her knowledge, earning an American Indian Studies degree from Haskell and an MBA from Baker University.

Fast forward to 2025, and you'll find Shannon standing out within her community, setting up her booth at local powwows and Native American based events. What started as a humble beadwork hobby, soon blossomed into a lively hub of creativity and cultural expression. From her intricate peyote stitch designs and beautifully crafted dreamcatchers, Shannon has successfully carved out a unique niche in the Native artisan community, with her signature purses and t-shirts.

Shannon enthusiastically shares the fascinating history of ribbon work at her booths. She explains that ribbons were introduced by the French and were traded with Native American tribes in the Great Lakes region. These ribbons circulated among tribes in the woodlands and extended to the Plains Indians in the Dakotas. Additionally, she passionately discusses the topic of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) whenever someone is unaware of it. Having lost her own grandmother to violence without justice being served, Shannon carries a collection that includes a purse featuring a handprint of a woman’s face. This symbolizes the ongoing issue of Missing, Murdered, and Indigenous Women.
